There are 7 temples around Thiruneelakudi which are together known as Saptashtana Shiva temples of Thiruneelakudi. At Shri Neelkantheshwarar temple, at Thiruneelakudi, Sage Markendeya attained Chiranjeevi status. As a token of gratitude and respect, Sage Markendeya worshiped Shri Shiva at the following 7 temples which are known as Saptashtana Shiva temples of Thiruneelakudi.
