This Shiva temple is located at Vakkupoigainallur near Nagapattinam town in Nagapattinam district of Tamil Nadu. This place is also known as Poiyyur. This is a Thevaravaippu sthala as it finds a mention in sacred hymns of Selva saint Appar. This temple is situated on the Nagapattinam Velankanni route via Akkaraipettai. The place is also known as Siddhashram. It is at about 6 kms from Nagapattinam new bus stand, 7 kms from Velankanni and very near to Gorakhasiddha jeeva samadhi.

Mulavar: Shri Nandinadeshwarar

Much details of this place are not available. We will add more details after visiting the place. This is a very beautiful, well kept small temple. The Shiva linga is a swayambhoo linga. There is no Rajagopuram but at the top of the entrance we come across stucco images of Shri Parvati Devi, Bhagwan Shiva and Shri Ganesha. Shri Soundaryanayaki Devi is in a separate shrine.

Kshetra puran:

Once Sage Vishwamitra entered the inner chamber of Kailash without permission from Nandi who was at the entrance. Nandi was unaware of this. Vishwamitra got several boons from Bhagwan Shiva. By his divine vision, Bhagwan Shiva came to know that Nandi has failed in his duty. As a punishment, he ordered Nandi to do penance for 1000 years on earth. Nandi requested Bhagwan Shiva, to suggest a place for his penance and Bhagwan directed him to this place. He reached this place and did penance.

2) The place got the name Sidhashram as several siddhas did penance at this place.

3) Bhagwan Shiva gave darshan to Gorakhasiddha.
