Shri Chokkanathar temple at Kudalur on Vennar bank Thanjavur

This is one of the Saptasthana Shiva temples of Karanthattangudu in Thanjavur at Kudalar on the bank of river Vennar. It is one of the 88 Thanjavur Palace Devasthana temples. We cannot provide much details as we have not yet visited this temple. This temple was constructed by Chola king Anabayacholan. The present structure may be about 1400 years old.

Mulavar: Shri Chokkanathar

Devi: Shri Meenakshi

Puranik name: Kudalur

There is also a Shri Bramha shrine in this temple. During the period of King Anabayacholan of Thanjavur there was a great famine in his kingdom. He went to the Shiva temple (Brihadeeshawaarar temple) built by his grand father and stood before the Lord praying to Him. At that time a divine voice directed him to go to Kudalur which was at that time ruled by Pandya king on his behalf. He consulted the Pandya king who took him to his astrologer from whom he used to get his guidance. At that time a divine voice directed the king Anabaya to construct a Shiva temple to the Eshanya (NE) direction to the Brihadeeshawarar temple. The king constructed temple and the consecration (pran pratishta) of the Shiva linga was done on Uttara nakshatra in the Tamil month Ani.

Special feature: The Suns rays fall on the Shiva linga in the month of Vaikashi and Maasi in the evening.

Prayers and worship:

1) Devotees worship Shri Bhairava in large numbers on Krishna ashtami after sunset. They believed that Shri Bhairava eradicates all ailments and black magic effects.

2) Devotees worship here for removal of Surya dosha

3) This is one of the pancha surya sthalams. Devotees believe that worshiping these 5 temples in a single day eradicates eye problems and Surya dosha.

Festivals:

On the Uttara nakshatra day in the Tamil month Ani, special worship is done between 7am-8am as that was the day the consecration of the temple took place.
