Kshetra Puran:

1. Sages Patanjali and Vyaghrapada did penance at Chidambaram to witness cosmic dance of Lord Shiva. Pleased with their worship, Lord Shiva performed his cosmic dance for them. Once again the Sages requested to Lord Shiva that they would like to witness his Rudra-Tandav and Ajaba Nritya. They also requested him to grace his devotees with darshan of his divine feet. Lord Shiva directed them to Thiruvarur which was also known as Shripuram in those days. When they reached there, they could see Shiva Lingas all over the place. Hence Sage Patanjali took the form of a serpent and Sage Vyaghrapada took the form of a tiger and worshiped Goddess Parvati (praised as Kamalambaal) at that place. She directed them to this place which was revered as Vimalakka (Vairam in Tamil). As per her directive, Sages Vyaghrapada and Patanjali made Shiva Linga of sand and worshiped Lord Shiva. Pleased with their worship, Lord Shiva performed Ajaba Nritya and at the same time gave darshan of his sacred feet. The place where he showed his sacred feet came to be known as Vimal meaning his sacred feet. Lord Vishnu, Lord Bramha, Muchukunda Chakravarti and all Gods and Goddesses witnessed this dance and had the darshan of sacred feet. From that day, this Kshetra is revered as Thiruvadi Kshetra, Thiruvilamal and Shivapada Kshetra.

2. According to the Sthala Puran, King Dasharatha (father of Lord Rama) visited this temple before performing Putra Kameshthi Yagnya.

4. Due to the presence of Goddess Madhurabhashini, this place is considered as Shri-Vidyapeetha.

5. This is one of the places where King Dashratha worshiped for child boon.

6. As Lord Shiva gave darshan of his feet at this place, there is no Navagraha shrine.

7. Nandi’s head is turned towards North-West as if to witness the cosmic dance of Lord Shiva when he showed his Vishwaroop.

Kshetra Purana:

According to the Puran, Lord Vishnu came in possession of a great bow. It gave him tremendous strength. Lord Vishnu was seized with ego and it is believed that he chased Gods through all the universe. The gods ran everywhere and finally came to Thiruvarur. They worshiped Lord Shiva and requested him to save them. Lord Vishnu who was following Gods, also reached Thiruvarur. As soon as he reached Thiruvarur, his strength vanished. It is believed that he stood still with a grounded bow and with a head resting on the bow. The Gods took the form of white ants and built an anthill at the end of the bow that rested on the ground. They gnawed at the end of the bow resulting in the string getting cut off from the bow. The string of the bow struck Lord Vishnu with such a force that his head was cut off. The Gods were dismayed at the loss of Lord Vishnu who was the protector of the universe. They again prayed to Lord Shiva, who appeared immediately. He restored Lord Vishnu to life. The Gods requested Lord Shiva to take his abode within the anthill. Lord Shiva stayed back in the anthill and he is praised as Lord Vanmiknathar.

This is an east facing temple. The rajagopuram on the way to this temple is praised as Azhagiyan Gopuram. There are stucco images of Dwarapal at the entrance. At the center of the gopuram we come across Adhikar Nandi.

Lord Vanmiknathar is bedecked with flowers and holy ash. He wears a crescent moon on his head. Shaiva Saint Appar has praised the main deity as Putridamgondar (one who resides in anthill) in his sacred hymns.

Ambika’s idol is made of bronze. She is seated in Tribhanga posture with her hand on the earth (Pruthvi). It is believed that her contact with the earth anchored Thiruvarur as Bhumi (Pruthvi) kshetra of Pancha Bhuta Sthalams. २.

Shri Araneri Achaleshwarar Temple at Araneri

This temple is located within the famous Tyagaraja Temple at Thiruvarur. The historical name of Thiruvarur is Araneri and Achaleshwaram. This temple is located in the southern parikrama of Shri Tyagaraja temple. This is a Padal Pethra Sthalam of Kaveri revered by Shaiva Saint Appar. Hence this temple must have existed even before the 7th century. There are stone inscriptions in the temple. The original temple is believed to be constructed by medieval Chola kings. The temple was rebuilt by Sembian Mahadevi. The extensions and endowments were made by Nayaks and Chola kings.

Moolavar: Shri Achaleshwarar, Shri Araneri Appar
Devi: Shri Vandarkuzhali, Shri Ambal Achaleshwari
Sacred Theertha: Shankha Teertha and Kamala Teertha
Sacred Vruksha: Padari Tree (Yellow color trumpet flower tree)
Puranik Name: Arur Araneri
Present Name: Araneri

Kshetra Purana:

1. According to Sthala Puran, a Pallava king named Kazhar Singhar came to this place along with his wife for worshiping Lord Shiva. At that time the queen saw the flowers that were kept for Lord Shiva’s worship. As she was attracted by the flowers, she smelled the flowers. This act is considered to be a sacrilege in the worship. A shiva devotee Seruthondar Nayanar who was present, cut the nose of the queen as a punishment. By Lord’s grace the nose was back in place. Later, by the grace and blessings of Lord Shiva, Seruthondar Nayanar became one of the 63 nayanmars.

2. As per Sthala Puran, Naminadhi Adigal was worshiping Lord Shiva without fail at Shri Achaleshwarar temple. Once when he came to the temple, he found that the lamp was about to get extinguished as there was no ghee in it. He felt if he tried to fetch ghee from his house it would be too late. He decided to approach the people staying very close to the temple. As these people belonged to the Jain community they mocked him and told him that Lord Shiva has Agni in his hand and moreover he was powerful, why he should need ghee for the lamp. They also mocked him by saying if his faith in Lord Shiva was true, he could light the lamp even with water. Adigal was very much annoyed and he came to the temple and lamented to Lord Shiva. He stated to Lord Shiva that he was so sinful that he had to hear such words with Lord Shiva as a witness. A celestial voice directed Adigal to bring water from the temple tank and light the lamp. When he did as directed by a celestial voice, he was delighted to see that the lamp was burning more brightly than before. Then he lit all the lamps in the temple with water instead of ghee or oil. The whole temple became bright as if it was daytime. The ruling Chola king came to know about this incident. He made Adigal the chief administrator of the temple. He also offered to help in conducting all the festivals in the temple. The Jains who had mocked the Adigal were ashamed of their behavior and regretted their attitude. Later on, Lord Shiva made Adigal one of the 63 nayanmars.

Those who worshiped here: Seruthondar Nayanar, Kazhar Singhar Nayanar and his wife,  Naminadhi Adigal, Shaiva Saints Appar, Sambandhar, Shaiv Saint Sundarar with his wife Paravai Nachiyar and the king Cheraman Peruman.

Shri Thrinethra Nathar Temple at Palliyin Mukkoodal (Thirupalli Mukkoodal)

This Shiva temple is situated at a distance of about 5 kilometers from Thiruvarur on the southern bank of Kaveri. It is at a distance of 10 kilometers from Thiruvirkudi, 3 kilometers from Pallivara Mangalam and 2 kilometers from Kekkarai. Now this place is known as Kuruvi Rameshwaram. The temple is at about 1 kilometer on Thiruvarur Kekkarai after crossing a bridge. The original temple existed even before the 7th century. This was reconstructed by Chola kings and extended by Vijaynagar kings. There are stone inscriptions in this temple belonging to the Chola period. Shaiva Saint Appar has sung sacred hymns on Lord Shiva of this temple.

Moolavar: Shri Thrinetranathar, Shri Mukkoodal Nathar, Shri Mukkon-eshwarar, Shri Thrinetraswami,

Devi: Shri Meimevukanni, Shri Anjakshi-ambal

Sacred Theertha: Mukkoodal Theertha (Shodash Theertha)

Kshetra Vruksha: Bilva

Puranik Name: Kekkarai Thirupalli Mukkoodal, Aryanpalli

Present Name: Thirupalli Mukkoodal

Kshetra Puran:

1. This is one of the places where Lord Shriram did Tarpan for his father. Hence it is believed that if one does Tarpan at this place he gets the benefit of doing Tarpan at Gaya. Hence the place got the name Kekkarai (Gaya karai).

2. It is believed that the temple tank was dug by Lord Ganesha for Sage Bhringi.

3. According to the Puran, Jatayu visited this place and performed penance. He requested Lord Shiva that he should be given an opportunity to take bath simultaneously at Kashi and Rameshwar to attain salvation. Lord Shiva gave him darshan and told him that he (Jatayu) will protect and try to save Sita when Ravan abducts her. During that fight his wings will be chopped off by Ravan. Finally when he meets Lord Shriram, his life will end at Lord Shriram’s feet. When Jatayu pleaded that he wanted to take a dip at Allahabad, Kashi and Rameshwar before his death, Lord Shiva arranged all the 3 sacred theerthas to come to this temple tank. The Lord further stated that taking a dip in this temple tank is equivalent to taking dip at 16 Setusamudra Snaan Ghats (16 sacred bathing places on the seashore) in Rameshwaram. Hence this temple tank is known as Shodasha-Setu-Theertha and Mukkoodal Theertha.

4. According to the Puran, there was a Chola king who was a staunch devotee of Lord Shiva. He used to worship Lord Shiva before taking his meals. Once when he reached this temple, he found the temple locked as he was late. The assistants who were aware of his habit of worshipping Lord Shiva before taking meals, kept the bag containing horsefeed in front of him and made it look like a Shiva linga. The King who was happy to see Shiva linga, completed his worship and had his meals. Next day when he came to know about the deception, he tried to lift the bag but was unable to lift it as the bag had transformed into Shiva Linga. Later he installed the Shiva Linga inside the temple.

5. According to Sthala Puran, a queen named Tapovadhani prayed to Goddess Parvati of this temple for a child boon. It is believed that Goddess Parvati herself appeared as a child floating on a lotus in the temple tank. The Queen noticed the child and raised her as her own daughter. It is believed that Lord Shiva married her later.

Those who worshiped at this place:  Lord Shriram, Jatayu, Sage Bhringi, Sage Moorakka and Shaiva Saint Appar.

Salient Features:

1. The Shiva linga is very beautiful.

2. The temple tank is believed to be the sangam of 3 rivers (Ganga, Yamuna and Savitri) like the Triveni Sangam at Allahabad.

3. As this place is associated with Lord Shriram and Jatayu, the place is known as Kuruvi Rameshwaram (In Tamil Kuruvi means sparrow) .

4. Lord Surya’s rays fall on the Shiva Linga on the Mahashivaratri day.

5. Nandi is facing the Sanctum with his head turned slightly to one side as if he is listening to something.

6. All the idols are very beautiful.

7. It is believed that there are 16 wells inside the temple tank. The devotees who take a dip in this well will get the benefit of taking a bath in the Mahamagam tank of Kumbhakonam.

This is an east facing temple. There is no Rajagopuram but there is an Arch at the entrance. The temple has one Parikrama. There is no Dhwajastambha. Balipeetha and Nandi are in front of the Sanctum. १.
