As mentioned earlier this temple lies in the same temple complex as that of Shri Agnishwarar Temple at Thirupugalur. This is at a distance of 12 kms from Nannilam, 21 kms from Thiruvarur, 27 kms from Nagapattinam, 32 kms from Mayiladuthurai, 41 kms from Kumbhakonam. This is a Padal Pethra Sthalam on the southern bank of Kaveri revered by Shaiva Saints Sambandhar, Sundarar and Appar. Hence this temple must have existed even before the 7th century. It was extensively renovated during the 10th and 11th centuries by Chola kings. There are 67 stone inscriptions available in the temple complex.

This is the birth place of Thirumuruganayanar. He served this shrine by supplying plants and flowers three times in a day. His devotion was praised by Shaiva Saint Sambandhar in his sacred hymns. He attended salvation at Achalapuram (Nallur Perumanam) during Shaiva Saint Sambandhar’s wedding.

About the temple:
The temple has 5 tiered rajagopuram with two prakarams. It is east facing. Balipeeth and Nandi are facing the sanctum. The shrine of Lord Shiva is located adjacent to Lord Agnishwarar. This is the birth place of Shri Muruga Nayanar. He attained salvation at Achalapuram. Lord Agni, King Nala, 18 Siddhas, Sambandhar, Appar and Sundarar worshiped at this temple. Shiva Linga is a Swayambhu Linga.
Other idols and shrines in this temple:
Bala Ganapati, Shri Dandapani, Shri Chandrasekharar and Shri Chandikeshwarar. Shri Muruga Nayanar’s shrine is opposite to sanctum.
Goddess Ambika is housed in a separate shrine facing the south. The sacred hymns sung by Shaiva Saint Sambandhar are inscribed on the walls.

1. Devotees believe that by worshiping Lord Vardhamaneshwarar they will be bestowed with wealth, health, wisdom, prosperity.
2. They believe by worshiping at this place they will be absolved of pitrudosha.
Poojas: Regular treekaal pooja, Pradosh pooja, Sankashti, Pournima and special pooja on Diwali and Pongal. Special poojas are performed on Tamil new year and English new year.
