The temple is located at Thiruvarur East Street at Thiruvarur. This temple is at a distance of 70 kms from Tanjavur, 42 kms from Kumbhakonam, 26 kms from Nagapattinam, and 41 kms from Karaikkal. This temple is also known as Thuvainayanar Temple / Durvasar Temple. The place is known as Arurparavaiyun Mandali. This is one of the Padal Pethra Sthalam revered by Sundarar and Vallalar.
This is on the southern bank of Kaveri and must have existed even before the 7th century. It was reconstructed by Chola kings and was renovated by Nayaks. There are stone inscriptions in the temple. According to the Sthala Puran, this temple was under the sea in the form of a sand temple.

Kshetra Puran:
1. As per the Sthala Puran, Shaiva Saint Sundarar had made a promise to his second wife that he will never part with her. As he wanted to see his first wife, Paravai Nachiyar, he proceeded to Thiruvarur. As a punishment for breaking the promise made to his first wife, he lost his vision. Without vision, he began his journey to Shiva sthalams praying to Lord Shiva for restoring his vision. At Kanchi Puram, by the grace of Lord Ekambareshwarar, he regained vision in the left eye. He reached Thiruvarur and prayed to Lord Shiva for vision in his right eye. Lord Shiva advised him to take bath in the temple tank and worship him. He regained vision in the right eye also when he took bath in the temple tank. This incident is indicated during the abhishek when we observe eye symbol on the Shiva Linga.
2. According to the Sthala Puran, once this was a sand temple under the sea. During Pralay, Gods and Sages sought refuge of Lord Shiva. Lord Shiva told the Sage Durvasa that if a tank could be dug at the Southeast (Agneya) corner of the land and if prayers are offered to him, the tide will subside and all the lives will be saved. Under the leadership of Sage Durvasa they carried out the instruction of Lord Shiva. They dug a tank and worshiped Lord Shiva. Lord Shiva aborted the fury of the sea and saved them. As Sage Durvasa worshiped Lord Shiva at this place he is praised as Durvasa Nayanar.

1. It is believed that this temple was under the sea as a sand temple.
2. It is stated in Sthala Puran, that all the idols in this temple were made by divine sculptor Vishwakarma.
3. During abhishek, the symbol of an eye is visible on the Shiva Linga.
4. The temple tank is in the Southeast corner.
5. Lord Shanishwarar is facing the south in a shrine. He is praised as Lord Anugraha Shanishwarar.
About the Temple:
The main temple consists of Sanctum Sanctorum, Antarala and a Mandap. The temple is on Keezhaveedhi near chariots. The temple is east facing with a three tiered Rajagopuram in damaged condition. Nandi and Balipeeth are after the Rajagopuram.
Moolavar Shiva Linga is on square Avudayar. At this temple Shaiva Saint Sundarar got vision in his right eye which is evident when we observe the eye symbol on the Shiva Linga during abhishek.
Koshta Murtis: Lord Vinayaka, Lord Dakshinamurti, Lord Lingodbhavar, Lord Brahma and Goddess Durga.
Goddess Ambika is in a separate shrine immediately after Rajagopuram facing south.
Idols and shrines in the prakaram: Lord Anjaneya, Lord Vinayaka, Lord Subramanya with Valli and Deivanai, Lord Shanishwarar and Lord Chandikeshwarar.
The temple tank is located in the Southeast corner as per the vastu rules.
Lord Shanishwarar faces the South and graces as Lord Anugraha Shanishwarar. Lord Vnayaka is praised as Lord Siddhi Vinayaka.
Prayers:
1. Devotees bathe in the temple tank and worship Lord Shiva with red flowers on Sunday for restoration of eyesight and cure for impairment of eyes.
2. Devotees whose prayers are answered show their gratitude by performing abhishek with milk and annadaan.
