This place is also known as Thirumalainallur. This temple is at a distance of about 5 kms from Trichy town. The temple is on the southern bank of river Kaveri i.e. on the bank of river Uyyakondan. This is Padal Pethra sthalam revered by shaiva saints Muvar namely Sundarar, Appar and Sambandhar. Saint Arunagirinathar has sung hymns on Lord Subramanya in this temple. According to purana, the original temple was constructed by Ravana’s half brother Karan. The temple must have existed even before the seventh century as Sambandhar has praised in his sacred hymn. The temple must have been constructed by Pallava king, later it was renovated by Cholas and extended by Vijayanagara kings. There are stone inscriptions in this temple. Most of them indicate endowments made by kings. According to a gazette in the 18th century this temple was used as a bunker during the war by French, British and Muslim rulers.

Kshetra Purana:
According to Purana, Sage Mrukanda rishi did severe penance and was blessed with Sage Markandeya as his son. Sage Markandeya had a very short life of 16 years only. He was well versed in Vedas, scriptures and highly knowledgeable. When he attained the age of 16 he was chased by Lord Yama to take away his life. Markandeya went to several Shiva sthalams and sought refuge. Finally he came to this place and told Lord Shiva about Yama chasing him. Lord Shiva promised to save him from Lord Yama. It is believed that Lord Shiva came out of the temple of the south end near the Dhwajastambha and left his footprints. This is one of the three places where Sage Markandeya was protected by Lord Shiva. At this place he promised to save his life and at Thirukadiyur he killed Yama. At Thirupanjeeli Yama was restored to life again.

About temple:
The temple is located on a rock at about 100 feet high surrounded by walls like a fort. There are 100 steps to reach the temple. This is Maadakovil in which the entire temple except the outer prakaram is on a raised level. The temple tank is inside the temple complex. The temple has three entrances of which two face the south and one facing the east. The temple occupies an area of four acres. All the shrines are enclosed by rectangular walls. The shrine of Lord Subramanya with Valli and Deivanai and Lord Vinayaka are at foothill. This is a west facing temple in which Dhwajastambha, Balipeeth and Nandi are facing the sanctum. The entrance to the main shrine is not opposite to the sanctum. It is on the right side in the south direction. It has a five tiered Rajagopuram at the base and steps start after the Rajagopuram. Sanctum sanctorum consists of sanctum, antarala and artha mandap. The shiva linga is small and is on a square (Avuduyar). The rays of the Sun fall on the Shiva linga and Shri Anjanakshi in the evening for one day in the month of Thai. Near the Dhawajastambha we come across footprints of Lord Shiva.
Koshtha murtis are Lord Vinayak, Lord Dakshinamurti, Ardhanarishwarar, Lord Brahma, Goddess Durga, Lord Chandikeshwarar.
In the prakaram of Lord Shiva’s shrine, there is a shrine of Lord Ganesha as Shakti Ganesha, Goddess Lakshmi, Goddess Saraswati, Goddess Balatripurasundari, Lord Subramanya with his consorts and Navagraha. Besides this, there are also idols of Lord Bhairav, Lord Shanishwar and Lord Surya in this prakaram. There are two Ambika shrines in this temple. When the lotus flower in one of the hands of Ambika idol was found damaged it was replaced with another idol. This idol was donated by a donor. In Goddess Anjanakshi’s shrine she is facing the east. She is in a standing posture with four hands and very attractive eyes. In the prakaram of Goddess Anjanakshi we have shrines of Lord Ganesha and Lord Subramanya. There is an idol of Lord Chandikeshwarar. The idol of Goddess Balambika is in another west facing shrine. In all the three shrines Nandi faces the sanctum. There are shrines of Lord Nataraja with Goddess Shivagami and Goddess Jyeshtha Devi. Goddess Jyeshtha devi is worshiped in this region even now. There is a shrine for Adi Vinayaka. There is a shrine of Lord Idarkanthan (Idar in Tamil is doubt or difficulty, Kanthan means protector). He is believed to clear all doubts and give clarity of thought. Jyeshtha Devi idol is unique. She is considered as elder sister of Goddess Lakshmi. She protects from accidents. She keeps everyone awake during travel and saves them from accidents. She was the family deity of Pallava King Nandi Verman. Those who worship with meru (hill type idol) keep it on the top of nine steps. These steps are known as Nava Avaranas. Jyeshtha Devi is considered as a second Avarana. In this temple there are two idols of small children by her side. One male child looks like Nandikeshwarar. He is praised as Maadan (Madu in Tamil is a bull). The idol looks like a female child praised as Vaakdevi. It is believed that Goddess Anjanakshi is in the form of Jyeshtha Devi at this temple. The male servant by her side is one of the Vaak devata of Goddess Parvati.
Idol of Lord Nataraja: A king who was crowned by Sage Sarama witnessed Ananda Tandav of Lord Shiva while worshiping Lord Shiva at this place. It is believed that this idol was sculpted by taking into consideration the feet of the Lord as its measure. As Lord Shiva saved the life of Sage Markandeya he is praised as UjjivanNathar. As he bestows all boons and satisfies the wishes of devotees he is praised as Karpaganathar.

Pujas:
Daily four rituals. Surya puja is done every ninety days in a year from the day of Sun’s rays falling on Lord Shiva and Ambika in the Tamil month of Thai. Weekly special puja on Mondays and Fridays. Pradosh pujas on Pradosh days. Monthly puja on new moon day, full moon day, Krittika nakshatra and chaturthi.
