Padal Pethra Sthalam Preface
Between 6th to 8th centuries, in South India, there existed 63 shaiva saints who were staunch devotees of Lord Shiva. They were from all types of men and women which included kings, merchants, traders and even ordinary laborers. They are all collectively known as Nayanmars. Out of their exemplary devotion to Lord Shiva, these Nayanmars visited temples of Lord Shiva and there they sang glories of Lord Shiva of those temples as well as of the temples. That means these temples existed even before the 6th century. Collection of these glories is called Thirumurai which again consists of three collections - Thirumanthiram i.e. collection of glories sang by Thirumular, Thevaram i.e. collection of glories sang by Appar, Sundarar, and Sambandhar, and Thiruvachagam i.e. collection of glories sang by Manikkavachagar.
The temples which are glorified in these collections of hymns collectively known as Padal Pethra Sthalam, meaning the places that were sang in the glories composed by Nayanmars. These temples are spread in 9 regions namely
- Chola Nadu I - North bank of Kaveri (63 temples)
- Chola Nadu II - South bank of Kaveri (127 temples)
- Thondai Nadu (32 temples) (Chennai, Kanchipuram area)
- Naadu Nadu (22 temples) (Central Tamilnadu)
- Pandiya Nadu (14 temples) (Madurai area)
- Kongu Nadu (7 temples) (Selam, Coimbatore area)
- Vada Nadu (5 temples) (North India)
- Eela Nadu (2 temples) (Ceylon)
- Tuluva Nadu (1 temple) (Gokarna Mahabaleshwar, Karwar)
We are planning to make a humble attempt to post details of each of the temples in Padal Pethra Sthalam.
In upcoming weeks, we will start posting these details every Thursday in English and every Sunday in Marathi.
We are grateful for the opportunity given to us by the Lord for this work and also grateful to the readers who are instrumental in motivating us to write these details. Please forgive us for any mistakes or omissions and please report them so that we can make appropriate corrections.
